Scottish baker's hyper-realistic cakes prove to be a huge hit online

A SCOTTISH baker is taking the internet by storm after pictures of her lifelike cakes went viral.

Glasgow based Christie Howieson has been posting the realistic cakes on her Facebook page, but gained national attention after popular social accounts Talking Baws and The Sports Bible shared an image of a cake resembling Celtic Park.

The 23-year-old only bakes as a hobby and has been amazed at the attention her creations have brought her.

"It's absolutely mental", Christie said. "I think that's the only way I can describe the feeling.

"Seeing the numbers on The Sports Bible post, for example, just blows my mind. I can't even imagine what a group of 30,000 people looks like!"

Christie works as an in-house graphic designer and has always had a passion for design - but admits her first cake she made she just "winged it".

" I had a friend ask me to make a small cake for her daughter as some had let her down - I had no idea what fondant was at the time!

"But I managed to get a mermaid looking cake to her and from there I just kept going.

" I'm fully self taught so I've just gained confidence and technique as I've went along. I graduated from the Glasgow School of Art last year so I think having a creative/artistic background has really helped."

The fun comes in baking the realistic cakes, which are her favorites. Christie said one of her top ones was a turtle, saying it looked so lifelike it freaked her granddad out.

But Christie has no plans to turn her cake-baking into a full time job just yet.

"It's really just my hobby - I work Monday to Wednesday (as a designer), which allows me to use my degree and and different creative skill.

"I bake the rest of the time, but I really love my varied week.
