From today (7th February) the chain stated that following wide-spread customer demand and a huge success in the States, the Mac Jr. and the Grand Big Mac will now be available for fans to enjoy across the country.
For a limited period only, the Big Mac will now be available in three different sizes including the original Big Mac, then new and limited-edition Mac Jr. (400kcal per serving, £2.19) - made with the all same iconic ingredients as the original only with one less patty - and the limited-edition Grand Big Mac (741kcal per serving, £3.99) - which uses the same ingredients but is larger than the original.
An established classic in the McDonald’s family, the Big Mac was first created in February 1968 by an American McDonald’s franchisee named Jim Delligatti in Pennsylvania, USA.
Delligatti originally wanted to call the burger ‘The Aristocrat’, however after consideration McDonald’s chose to go with the now famous name, Big Mac.
Best known for its special (and for a long time, secret) sauce, which took Delligetti two years to perfect, the Big Mac became famous around the world for its "one-of-a-kind taste".
The combination of two beef patties, pickles, lettuce, onions, cheese and special sauce, sandwiched and separated by a triple-decker sesame seed bun saw the burger go on to become a huge hit with burger fans.
Following great success in the USA, the Big Mac arrived in the UK in 1974 when the first UK restaurant opened on Woolwich High Street.
From there the brand has grown exponentially and now the Big Mac is sold in over 100 countries worldwide and is considered to be one of the world's most iconic burgers.
Steven Howells, head of marketing at McDonald’s UK said: “As our most iconic McDonald’s product, we are proud and excited to be celebrating 50 years of the legendary Big Mac.
"For the first time ever in the UK, we are introducing the two new sizes for a limited time. We know a lot of our customers will remember their first Big Mac, and this campaign will hopefully encourage them to enjoy that unforgettable first bite all over again!”
• The Grand Big Mac and Mac Jrn are available until 20 March.
