Two Scottish restaurants awarded Stars in 2022 Michelin Guide

The Michelin Stars for 2022 have been announced, and two Scottish restaurants have been awarded one star each.

Unalome by Graeme Cheevers and The Glenturret Lalique restaurant were both awarded one star in the 2022 Michelin Guide.

Award-winning chef, Graeme Cheevers announced he was opening Unalome, his first solo venture, on Kelvingrove Street - the site where The Sisters restaurant once was - in late 2020.

Graeme has had a hugely successful career with Geoffrey Smeddle at fine dining restaurant Étain, Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond and the luxury Isle of Eriska Hotel.

The Guide that Unalome had 'bold, classically inspired' dishes and that the Glenturret Lalique was 'sophisticated'.

Speaking ahead of opening Unalome, Graeme made his intentions clear, saying: “There is nowhere else I would rather launch my own restaurant than in my home city of Glasgow.

"It is scary going solo, but I feel like I’m now at a point in my career where I’m ready and I have the confidence and experience to take it forward and make it a success.

“Unalome will be a dining experience unlike anything else you’ll find in the city. But, it will also be accessible and relaxed so that everyone can come and enjoy it.

"I don’t want it to be an occasion restaurant – I want people to visit again and again and experience something slightly different every time.

“We’re hitting the ground running and have high hopes to achieve Glasgow’s first Michelin star since 2004 within our first year.

"To follow the successes of Andrew Fairlie or Gordon Ramsay in Glasgow would be incredible. I can’t wait to get started.”

Cail Bruich was awarded Glasgow's first Michelin Star since Gordon Ramsay's Amaryllis restaurant closed in 2004.

The Glenturret Lalique restaurant also opened in 2021 and is headed by former Number One at the Balmoral head chef Mark Donald.

Mark took up the post at the Balmoral Hotel's Michelin Starred restaurant in 2018 after a 13-year stint abroad.

The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant, located in the heart of what's thought to be one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries, is the first of its kind, as no other whisky brands are currently home to a restaurant dedicated to fine dining.

Speaking on our podcast Scran, Mark said this of Michelin Stars: “I'd be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it, but I'm not going to have it in my opening statement saying we will get a Michelin star in the first year or anything like that.

"Obviously accolades are lovely and it's a great recognition for myself and all the team's hard work, wherever you are.

"We're striving for excellence, and we're striving to be better than we were the day before. I'm not going to just push for Michelin only because I'm not just cooking for Michelin, I'm cooking for every guest that comes in.

"If the stars come then it's fantastic and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be happy about it. But it's not just the top of the list. It's not all I come to work for.”

Speaking about the Michelin achievement, Mark said: “I am so proud that Michelin have acknowledged the hard work, creativity and dedication from my team - and everyone at The Glenturret. Our Scottish heritage and surroundings are vital to the heart and soul of the restaurant.”

The 2022 selection of restaurants for Great Britain and Ireland has a total of 1285 restaurants, including 194 Michelin Stars and 122 Bib Gourmands.

The 2022 has one new Three Star, five new Two Stars and 19 new One Stars joining the selection, the 2022 Guide offers, the team say, an 'impressive illustration of the vibrancy, creativity and excellence of the British and Irish culinary scenes.'

Last week Celentano's and Ka Pao, both based in Glasgow, were awarded Michelin Bib Gourmands for the first time.
