Edinburgh’s Civerinos has had a busy year or so, with the opening of their new restaurant, Prom Slice, at Portobello, and West Slice in Corstorphine.
However, they’ve also been revisiting their roots, with the refurbishment of the original Civerinos, which was opened by restaurateur Michele Civieria on 5 Hunter Square back in 2014.
It’s been closed for 10 months, so Edinburgh designer studios Ja Coco!, who is also responsible for the recently reopened Superico Bar & Lounge, Prom Slice, Scran New Town and Stag Barber Co, among other venues in the capital, and Hot Slice Studio could collaborate on the interior and branding
Now it’s reopened, but with a new “indoor neon garden”, which features ivy on the ceiling, as well as a refreshed main restaurant, basement dining room and terrace area. It’s a look that they’re describing as “New York club room meets subway with a punk/skate vibe and an Eighties and Nineties hip-hop pop soundtrack”.
They’ve gone from a simple space, with pew-like seating, to something a bit more typical of Ja Coco!’s “maximalist” style, with checked tiles, raspberry banquettes, neon signs and huge globe lights. After sharing their new look on social media, tables have been booked out until November, though you can still call on the day, from 9am, to see if space has become available.
For those who’re fans of the original Italian street food menu, there are still some signature dishes that have been on the food list since the beginning. These include the Civerinos pizza, with sugo, Sicilian fennel sausage, pepperoni, rosemary, garlic oil and burrata, as well as their classic Parmesan fries.
However, there are also a few new additions, like the vegan Savage Garden, with double sugo, olives, roast peppers, mushroom, red onion, chilli, rocket, Sicilian crumb and olive oil, and platters that are designed to be shared “family style”, such as The Big Parm chicken parmigiana and the Tagliata Platter of steak strips, Parmesan fries and truffle aioli.
They’ll also be offering chicchetti, bowls of pasta and salad, as well as their zeppole doughnuts with cinnamon sugar.
