Prize Scottish fish and chip shop transports foodies back to 1940s with prices

An award-winning Fife chippy is rolling back prices for one day only.

In a nostalgic tribute to the past, Cromars Classic Fish and Chips in St Andrews is celebrating  National Fish and Chip Day and the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday 6 June with a special themed day and 1940s-inspired price rollback.

National Fish and Chip Day has been moved back to 6 June this year to coincide with the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Honouring this special commemorative event, Cromars - who were crowned Scotland’s best fish supper at the 2023 Scotland’s Fish & Chip Awards - is transporting customers back to 1944 by rolling back the price of a poke chips to £1.94, playing 40’s tunes and donning era-appropriate outfits to get into the wartime spirit.

Historically, fish and chips have been inextricably tied to the war effort in Britain. Following the dish’s peak in popularity in the 1920’s, fish and chips quickly became a national favourite.

As a result, when the UK Government introduced its food rationing initiative in January 1940, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill prevented fish and chips from being included; believing that this would dampen morale and be detrimental to the war effort, referring to the pair as ‘good companions’.

Wendy Napthine-Frame, owner and founder of Cromars, said: “We are beyond excited to welcome customers to Cromars to celebrate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

"It’s clear to us that fish and chips have been incredibly important to people across the UK historically, along with continuing to be a lifeline to our local community. Having grown up within fishing communities, and supporting Scottish fishermen within my business, it means a lot to Cromars that we are able to celebrate in this way.”

In addition to offering a discount to customers to celebrate the occasion, Cromars will be raising money for Poppy Scotland.

All funds raised help fund vital life-changing support for the Armed Forces community across Scotland.

Wendy added: “We are blessed in St Andrews with wonderful beaches and countryside, and we are well aware that we may not have had the privilege of living in such a safe and beautiful part of the world had it not been for the valiant efforts of the British and Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy over 80 years ago.

“As a result, in addition to offering our 1940s inspired price rollback, we will be raising money for Poppy Scotland on June 6 and will have donation pots on site for any customers who would like to contribute to this invaluable charity.”

T’s & C’s: one poke of chips will be available per customer for £1.94 whilst stocks last. This offer is valid from 11:30 am – 8:30 pm on June 6 2024.
