New nostalgia club ready to bring a taste of the 80s and 90s back to Glasgow

New venue Club Tropicana and Vogue has opened its doors on Renfield Street and is offering guests a nostalgic trip back to the 80s and 90s with its themed club nights.

Aiming itself at broader age range than most clubs, Club Tropicana manager James Kelly says the venue will be "an attractive proposition for clubbers even outwith the age group who normally club" and will "lend itself to a broader audience" than other clubs in the city.

Billing itself as Glasgow's newest twin scene nightclub, the venue splits into its constituent parts with Club Tropicana transporting all who enter back to the 80s with bands like Duran Duran, Culture Club and A-ha, while Vogue offers a 90s-centric room filled with hits from dance icons like Groove Armada and Faithless through to pop bands like Hanson and the Backstreet Boys.

The drinks offering is suited to the retro theme and includes brands like Red Stripe lager and Hooch.

James told the Dram magazine that the club is for anyone who is just looking for a fun night out, he said: "I like the feeling that when people come here they don’t have to act a certain way to fit in here. In some other clubs in this town you have to act a certain way, dress a certain way and you have to feel a certain way.

"It’s too cool for school. The dress code is smart casual. We’re not going to go down the line of the hipsters. We’re not looking for that sort of idea. It’s hip to be cool but not cool to be hip.

"We play everything from Footloose and Flashdance and the movie songs that every generation knows because they’ve all seen them with their mums. We also play the 90s dance tracks like Insomnia that people don’t play in clubs anymore because they are too far gone."

The club recently hit the headlines after its staff recruitment ad called for candidates who were able to care for a Tamagotchi and complete a Rubik's cube in under ten minutes as well as bust some 90's dance moves, which has to be the strangest list of qualifications you'll see for any job listed anywhere.
