Edinburgh-based gin Achroous named among best in world at global spirits awards

An Edinburgh-based gin producer is celebrating after his popular gin was named among the best in the world at a top global spirits awards.

Achroous, the signature gin from Leith-based Electric Spirit Co., was among only a small selection of gins from across the globe to score 96 points or higher out of the possible 100 available at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).

Founder and distiller James Porteous was delighted to receive the coveted gold medal for his signature gin, with it being one of only 32 out of the 560 competing gins that received a medal to do so.

Porteous said: “I’m chuffed to bits and totally gobsmacked. Only a tiny number of spirits receive this medal, and it’s pretty humbling to think I’ve scored higher than some of the big guns of the industry.

"There’s a baffling number of gins on the market right now, and although I’ve always been really pleased with the feedback about Achroous, it’s something else to hear that you’ve absolutely nailed it by an organisation like the IWSC.”

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the IWSC is highly regarded within the global spirits industry and receives thousands of entries every year from across the full spectrum of spirits production.

Following the double-blind tasting and chemical analysis of hundreds of entries from around 90 countries, judges scored the gin 96 points out of a possible 100, a rating reserved for ‘excellent spirits with an exceptional balance and rare and complex flavours’.

Porteus added that only six other gins had scored as highly, ranking Achroous as one of the top ten gins in the world.
