Lerwick Brewery Launch Azure in Bottles

Lerwick Brewery, hailing from the most northerly islands in the UK, have made the move to launch Azure in bottles following its success on draught.

Azure is a straw coloured, hoppy ale with a 4.3% ABV. Its light, floral flavours have made it a hit with the public, who voted it ‘Beer of the Festival’ at the Montrose Rhythm & Brews festival in March.

Its name is a homage to the Pacific Ocean which separates America and New Zealand where the brewery have sourced hops for their beer. The bottle design also takes inspiration from New Zealand Maori tattoo patterns.

Isla Mercer, Chief Executive said: “We put a lot of thought into the creation of our beers and Azure is no exception. Shetland has strong links to New Zealand, with many Shetlanders settling there during the clearances in the 19th Century. We wanted to mark this connection by using New Zealand hops and having a New Zealand influence in the label design.

“We completely sold out of our first batch just on pre-orders alone so have been very busy brewing more to meet with the current demand. We’re delighted with the positive reaction to Azure so far and have high hopes for it”.

Rhanna Turberville, Head Brewer, said: “We’re looking forward to working with more New Zealand hops in the future as shortages have meant we’ve had to look further afield to find new and exciting hops to brew with. Azure is brewed with American Cascade and New Zealand Rakau which gives it a refreshing elderflower nose and taste followed by a bitterness which ties all the flavours together.”

• Azure will be available in Aldi’s summer beer festival and Beer52’s June box as well as a variety of independent retailers throughout the UK.
