With this in mind, and with so much choice in the supermarkets, we have tried a panettone from the big name brands to find out which are worth buying this Christmas.
From traditional to something a bit different and chocolatey, here are some of the best (and worst) panettones available to buy now.
We tried the smaller version of this (as there were five in total and my love of panettone is strong, but not that strong).
A soft, buttery cake, it has a good amount of fruit and peel and was as good as some you’d find in an Italian deli.

One for chocolate fans, this is more like a chocolate chip cake with a hard chocolate topping (with a scattering of milk, dark and white chocolate chips).
This was soft but not as moist as some of the others. It tasted nice, but sweet (as you might imagine). A good option for chocoholics.

Presented in a gold box, tied up with a purple bow, gives this one full marks as a gift. Inside the wrapped up cake has a chocolate topping, studded with hazelnuts, almonds, candied orange peel and freeze dried cherries.
So far, so bougie. Inside there’s a good amount of candied orange peel, sultanas and candied cherries, but this panettone was disappointingly dry.

This panettone may be on the spendy side, but it does come in a fabulously festive red tin which can be reused (it also gives it good gift appeal).
It’s not a traditional number as, inside, you’ll find pockets of zingy orange sauce, semi-candied apricot and fiery ginger.
It’s also another one that’s topped with chocolate. It was buttery, soft and moist and very, very moreish. One for those that aren’t sure about traditional panettone.

Shaped like a giant star and topped with chocolate and mini white, dark and milk chocolate stars, this is more like a birthday cake than what you might expect from a panettone.
Sweet and soft, the bread is filled with chocolate pieces and a cream filling. A bit too sweet for me but it’d make a nice gift for those with a sweet tooth.

Presented in a jazzy box, this panettone is exactly what it says on the box, a Christmas classic. Filled with candied peel and sultanas, it’s rich, soft and very moreish. One of traditionalists
