Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without the humble mince pie.
But with a market saturated, picking the best one can be a festive minefield. Never underestimate the importance of a good pie either, so to help you pick the tastiest one this Christmas we’ve reviewed mince pies from the UK’s leading supermarkets.
Co-op’s Irresistible Mince Pies just don’t pack a punch this year. The pastry is tasty enough but they simply lack in filling and we hoped for more. 3/5
If you like your mince pies with a kick then Lidl’s Deluxe Luxury Mince Pies are probably the booziest of them all. The pies are laced with cognac and come with a good crumbly pasty, however, they would benefit from a powdered sugar garnish instead of granulated bits of sugar. 3.5/5
If it is home made it can go either way but Aldi’s deep filled, rich mince pies certainly do not disappoint. The pastries are filled with figs, dates and rose water, sealed with a star and sprinkled with sugar. They might be the most expensive pies on the list but they’re also the best. You’ll definitely want more than one. 5/5
Waitrose’s All Butter Mince Pies have a good level of filling and come with big , juicy cherries and a splashing of brandy but unfortunately there’s not much depth to the flavour and the pastry isn’t that great either. A disappointing entry from the Queen’s supermarket. 2.5/5
Mince pies don’t tend to come with a lattice dressing - but Tesco have done it anyway with their spiced rum mince pies. The design takes away the traditional festive cheer and taste wise they don’t
really excel either. 2/5
High hopes always come with Marks and Spencer products but unfortunately The Collection Mince Pies just don’t meet expectations. The pies are quite dry with not much filling, however, the pastry is quite tasty though. You’ll not say no but you might not gorge on them either. 2.5/5
A surprisingly strong entry from Asda and also the most expensive on our list. These well filled pies might not be bursting with fruit but they are juicy and have a decent boozy flavour to them. 3.5/5
They might not look the fanciest but Sainsbury’s fruity and filled mince pies are one of the best for value for money. The pastry could be more buttery but it does have a nice and juicy filling. 3.5/5
