Referring to the definition of the word Lore - 'A body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth,' Laphroaig say this new expression is inspired by traditions and tales passed down from generation to generation of Laphroaig’s Distillery Managers since 1815.
Laphroaig lore began around 1800 when brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston invented and crafted a recipe for an extraordinarily rich single malt on the remote Scottish island of Islay.
Today, Laphroaig's legacy is continued by the present Distillery Manager, John Campbell. Drawing from the some of the finest selection of cask types including ex-Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry hogsheads and quarter casks, Laphroaig Lore is an exciting new expression reflecting the Laphroaig story.
Campbell, who believes the product is outstanding said: “It is the epitome of what one expects from a non-chill filtered Laphroaig single malt whisky, all delightful seaside minerals, smoke, fudge, vanillas and nuts on the nose, exceptionally rich, peaty and a spicy chilli-like bite to taste, then dry and sweet to finish. Wonderfully balanced, it’s our story, bottled, the richest of the rich.”
NOSE: Rich and smoky with seaside minerals and a hint of ash and bitter chocolate drops. Vanilla follows with oily unroasted chestnuts and a hint of fudge with a malty sweetness. A drop of water adds a creamy clotted cream note with fruit appearing in the form of unripe citrus in a flan glaze.
PALATE: Richly peaty with a spicy chilli bite.
FINISH: Short dry finish and a long sweet aftertaste.
• Bottled at 48% ABV, Lore will be available from all good retailers and whisky specialists from 22nd March 2016 (700ml) priced at £85 (RRP).
